Where does discarded clothing go?

Annually, it’s estimated we produce 92 million tonnes of textile waste.

That’s equivalent to the weight of over 61 billion cars.

This is a problem.

What contributes to fashion waste?
  • Dead stock ( unused fabrics )
  • Unsold clothing
  • Damaged clothing
  • Un wanted clothing
  • Over production
Where does our clothing often go, when it’s discarded ?
Landfill
With many of our clothing being made out of synthetic materials which won’t break down and leak micro plastics into water ways and soils, this isn’t a sustainable solution.
Here are some resources to help keep unwanted, unwearable clothing out of landfill
For Brands
There’s fabulous recycling & re purposing initiatives for clothing & textiles available such as:
For Consumers, you can
  • Donate
  • Upcycle
  • Mend
  • Recycle with a textile recycling initiative such as:
          After ANZ
          Recycle Smart
          Upparel
Sometimes, waste or sending items to landfill is unavoidable.
However, if we can reduce mass production, mass consumption and harness a relationship with our clothes, our impact will be able to lessen.
